I work full time as a Software Developer, but I hardly ever do anything with it outside of work. Too many other interesting options to keep me more than busy. Aside from not having enough time to do all the projects I would like to do, I also manage to make it even more complicated by starting several at the same time. Luckily my fiance is understanding and super helpful. The fiance keeps pretty busy herself mostly with family and friends, but she is a constant driving force to get things done.
My hope is that this blog serves a dual purpose. One of which will be encouraging us to do more, hopefully through comments by interested readers, as well as possibly helping anyone who is interested in any of the projects we're currently working on, have worked on, or are planning to work on.
For those that are interested a broad overview might be in order. We're 28, living together in a house I bought 2 years ago and are planning on getting married in September. Aside from renovating the house, I like to build things. Whether those things are made of wood, Lego's, code... it doesn't really matter. The fiance likes to refinish furniture as well as other hobbyish things like sewing/quilting.
Our current list of projects revolve around random interests, utility purposes, and generally just needing to get stuff done.
- As I mentioned before, We have a house. It's pretty old and needs renovated and updated. We've recently finished some updates to the living room including painting, adding a ceiling fan, an entry light, some drywall fixes and redecorating. I've also started tearing the basement apart so I can finish it and make it into a new and improved living room.
- The fiance wants to beautify the house a little before we have some guests stay with us over the wedding weekend. A few days ago I removed and installed a new vanity in the bathroom, but it's not quite done yet, however it is functional.
- The guest bedroom is also being prepped for new wall colors and a new ceiling fan. This one has a specific time frame. The fiance hates edging, so I'll be doing that and the fan while she paints the rest of the walls, and then art and arranging the room are her duties as well.
- This spring we also did a lot of landscaping and a little gardening. I build a handy little planter to grow some vegetables in the front yard.
- A friend of mine will soon be closing on his house and I'm trying to rebuild a gas grill for him. I've started the cleaning process as well as getting new burners and a test heat shield. The outer shell is stainless steel, but the guts kinds rusted away to nothing. This one has a time frame so I'm not doing too bad.
- Recently both of my sisters had babies within weeks of each other so I was recruited to make them each something. My niece will be getting a small tea party table with a chalkboard top and my nephew will be receiving a Duplo Lego table. The fiance will be in charge of most of the painting. I'll be fashioning some chairs as well as re-purposing single leg end tables to have four legs to make them a little sturdier. They can't sit yet so I still have some time here.
- Unfortunately the Duplo Lego table reignited my passion for Lego's so I'm planning to make an interesting "castle on an island" themed table for decoration in my unfinished basement. Again, I have time.
- The fiance wants some furniture, and I'm really interested in making it. I think I have everything I need for the bench she wants at the end of the bed. Now all I need to do is find the time to actually build it.
- The other piece of furniture (for now) is an ottoman for the living room. I like having my feet up so to be able to continue to cuddle we'll need an ottoman instead of the other end of the couch.
- The breakaway hit Minecraft also holds a lot of interest for me. I've slowly been constructing my own personal city/fortress on the hill. I like playing it in survival mode, so it's taking a lot longer having to mine everything myself.
- Aside from just playing Minecraft, I've had an interest in writing a mod for it as well. I'm currently going through some of the tutorials to get a handle on the code base so I can start working on my own.
The plan is to update the blog often if not daily. I would like to keep anyone reading up to date on my day to day progress as well as answering questions if I can. Expect to see pictures and links as well. The fiance wants to be the photographer which is good news for you.
Is it ironic that I made another project (this blog) while in the middle of all of these other projects? Anyway, no time to think, only do. <<< That, by the way, is never advisable.
